About Brewing Companion

Our mission, editorial integrity guidelines, and the team behind the coffee science.

Welcome to Brewing Companion, an independent online publication dedicated to explaining the physical and chemical principles behind home coffee brewing and espresso setups. Our goal is straightforward: to help home coffee enthusiasts calibrate their gear, understand extractions, and brew cafe-quality cups at home without getting lost in marketing hype.

Our Core Mission

For many beginners, specialty coffee and espresso can feel intimidating. Between complex variables like grind sizes, brew temperatures, flow profiling, and yield ratios, it's easy to make mistakes that lead to sour or bitter cups.

Brewing Companion is built to serve as an objective reference. We break down the variables of coffee extraction using observable chemistry and simple physical frameworks. Whether you are using a basic French press or a dual-boiler espresso machine with flow control, we provide instructions tailored to your equipment setup.

Our Operating Philosophy

We do not treat brewing like a mysterious ritual. Extraction is simply the dissolving of soluble organic solids from roasted coffee beans using heated water. By treating extraction as science rather than guesswork, any beginner can learn to dial in delicious espresso.

Editorial Principles & Standards

To ensure our readers receive the most accurate and trustworthy advice, Brewing Companion operates under strict editorial standards. We recognize that trust is our most valuable asset, and we maintain it through the following principles:

1. Absolute Independence

We do not accept sponsored content, paid placements, or manufacturer kickbacks. All grinders, scales, espresso machines, and accessories discussed in our articles are purchased with our own operational funds. This allows us to write candid, uncompromised reviews detailing the actual physical limitations and design drawbacks of any piece of equipment.

2. Data-Driven Recommendations

Our espresso and pour-over guidelines are not based on subjective intuition. We verify our extraction rates using precision digital refractometers to measure Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Extraction Yield (EY). When we recommend a specific temperature range or grind profile, we do so because we have validated those parameters across hundreds of test brews.

3. Clarity and Accessibility

We avoid the flowery, exclusionary language often found in high-end specialty coffee circles. We describe flavors in plain English, prioritize practical variables (like time, grind size, and water temperature), and supply clear checklists and troubleshooting steps for every guide.

4. Continuous Maintenance

Specialty coffee changes rapidly as home gear evolves. We audit our existing articles every month to update steps, refine grind advice, and ensure our recommendations match the current baseline of home-brewing technologies.

Who Runs Brewing Companion?

Brewing Companion was founded by Jongwon, a home coffee researcher and technical analyst. Frustrated by the lack of clear, numbers-based guides for entry-level espresso enthusiasts, Jongwon began documenting variables, logging extractions, and writing calibration frameworks. Today, Jongwon oversees the testing protocols and writes the deep-dive guides for the site.
